It's Tuesday morning and I am slamming coffee. I wonder if Jesus drank coffee...?
The boys and I are enrolled in a hunter's safety class. The kids have to take it before they can get a hunting license in the state of Idaho, and it's a class full of good stuff. last night I learned how to survive for a week in the wilderness with a plastic trash bag, and a good knife. Pretty much the same things you need at home! The class is full of dads and their kids, so I feel a little out of place. My boys are very excited about it. It's this whole testosterone thing.
I've been thinking a whole bunch and praying about stuff, and I think maybe I am learning a thing or two. Maybe not. It's hard to tell.
I was thinking about being a Bible scholar. We're really fortunate, here in the West, to have so much opportunity to study that Book. But, I need to get off my ever-expanding-bottom and apply what I know. I suspect that I know enough to be an effective Christian, even if I never open my bible again. Don't freak out, because I am not throwing it away. I am just saying that I spend more time studying about Jesus than actually Being With Jesus.
Plus, God has been pointing out how very much I, and the believers around me, tend to be in-grown. Do you know what I mean by that? We are always together in our cocoon of Christianity.
Jesus wants me to be a worker in the Harvest. My Uncle was just telling me how I am to be making disciples "while going." That's the Great Commission passage. I want to make disciples while staying and studying. Because that's very comfortable and tidy. That way, I won't break a nail. The ladies that I spend time with every week don't need to learn much more, either. They also need to "Go and Make Disciples".
We need to get busy.
This is a big lesson. I am very excited to see what it is going to look like as I work it through. One of my friends is dreadfully concerned that I am going to turn heretic and forsake the fellowship of believers. That's not the case at all! I just need to get obedient, and get off my laurels, or haunches, or whatever you call those.
The fields are white for harvest.....

Well said! I was thinking the same thing just the other day. Do you think God is teaching us something together? That would be cool! He's asking me to love my neighbors. I mean really love them...not just wave hi to them and smile as we drive away, but apply what I've been learning the past 10 years. Jesus never went far from his home. He helped those that he came into contact with each day. Obviously He has me in this neighborhood for a reason and I deny Him everyday I ignore them.
Maybe I should take a break from bible study more often. I mean I LOVE the fellowship with the girls, but you do get stuck in your own little bubble and forget to look around and see who God has put right next to you to love.
Kelly, I'm going to throw in a persepcetive that is slightly different than my father's. You said, "We need to get busy". I think that what we really need is to get "unbusy". We need to stop the running and take time to sit with Jesus and then take time to BE with people without making a project out of it and being BUSY about what we are doing. If you have the intention to be busy, the people you are with will feel as though they are being "worked on" instead of enjoyed, instead of feeling as though you are "with" them.
I think it is because of our culture that we compartmentalize everything. First, I will gain all of the knowledge, then I will go out and tell everyone. But as observation has shown, the going is more important than the learning. God always seems to give you what you need - when you need it - as long as you are willing to go.
Think of Colossi, no apostle ever made it there and yet long before Paul was in the region - there was already a Christian church! Someone, perhaps from Jerusalem whom knew Jesus was probably there teaching and praying and being lead by the Holy Spirit.... Awesome!
Best get those boys some single shots or you will go broke from the cost of shells for practice!
My knee was the end of my free, unlimited amounts of ammo - now I have to pay for all of mine! Sniff.....
