Reading

I am useless without my books. Seriously. I so need to unpack.
It is my habit to read in every single still moment. I read in bed at night, while eating, and at traffic lights. Plus, I read the mail while actually driving. Is that bad?
I like to read in English, of course. It's a fabulous language when used well. I also like to read in Latin and Greek and Spanish and French and German.
I look at Hebrew sometimes, but I can't read it. I appreciate Hebrew more like an art. It's beautiful and facinating, and I don't have any idea what the meaning of the symbols could possibly be. So I run my eyes over it in wonder. This is similar to the way that I read the other languages mentioned. I run my eyes over the beauty. The thing with those other languages is that I can sound out the words, and occationally, I even understand one. It's a lot like listening to political debates; there's lots of words, and sometimes one makes sense.
Don't be thinking that I actually speak these languages, because I don't. I just have this whole language love. I caress them, and translate them with my dictionary, and pretty much spend all evening on a phrase. It makes me very happy.
The whole reason behind my recent movie watching, is that I have read every unpacked book in the house. Ok, that's not true. But there's no titles that really grab me. I ought to go to the library, I suppose.
What are some really great books that I could get? The page-turning type. Those that you want to read over and over, and quote from time to time....
Actually, I think I am going to kind of go with this whole movie phase. I just got a card at Hollywood Video, so every movie I rent for the next 30 days is half off. After that, I'll go back to books.

I love Tony Hillerman's Navajo mystery books. Robin Cooks writes some gripping science mysteries - though some are a little gross for me.

Rent something fun like Cat and Mouse (chinese martial arts, with a cute twist, very PG rated) or Blood Diamond. The boys would lover Blood Diamond (lots of blood!) or even Agent Cody Banks can be fun for kids and adults alike!

I saw Blood Diamond. Is that with Leonardo Decaprio? I liked it. I think it's probably the only good movie that he's made, but I don't know if it's good for the kids. Maybe, I can't really remember, Shoot! Now I have to watch it again and see if my boys can see it.
Oh, no, soubanh just called. He said absolutely not for the kids. What with all the killing of the women and children and all.

Your boys should see We Are Marshall. It's the true story of the football team that died. I only say that because I'm thinking of buying it for my dad for Christmas.

SHHH! Don't say anything all of you all that know my dad, k. :)

All this is to say, kelly, PLEASE don't stop reading and start watching movies. I pretty sure life would cease to exist as we know it if you did not have a book in your hands at all times!

WHAT'S NEXT TELEVISION???

No, Kara, I can't imagine that I'll ever go so far as to watch television. Then the world really would cease to spin!
I'm kind of in the Television-is-of-the-devil camp.
Movies are kind of fun, though!
Kristoff, are you recommeding that my young children watch movies involving the slaughter of women and children? For shame!

Kelly,

DO NOT let your boys watch Blood Diamond. It is a fantastically done film but extremely violent (graphically and realistically so, not like some horror film). It really will make you think about the state of the world but it haunted me for days and I am an adult.

As far as books are concerned, I can't think of any off the top of my head that I would recommend except "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" but Ann Bronte (I think it was Ann but it could have been one of other sisters). I love that book with a passion. I am currently reading "Forever Amber" by Kathleen Willis. It was a scandalous book when it came out in 1944 and I am constantly shocked because Granny read it when it first came out (she was 14) and it is wildly inappropriate for her. The story line is grabbing but I find the protagonist to be annoying.

Forever Amber was made into a movie, which I have on VHS. Loved it!
Jenn, I think our Granny was a tad bit more fun than we imagined when we were growing up. After all, look at her granddaughters! She begat such a fun bunch of women...

Well, I did say the emphasis was "blood" after-all. Actually, my kids walked when they found out it was actually a real story. Seems only fiction is good enough for them!

Ok, how about Ratatouille? A very funny film and all of the kids went for it!

And for black-belt momma, how about Myth with Jackie Chan. May not be appropriate for younger teens but very exciting love story with some real humor, no nudity, though suggested.....
