The boys and I went to the Nampa Rod and Gun Club last night. This hunter's safety class requires them to actually fire a weapon, and then to clean it. This program is obviously run by men. No woman worth her salt would go into a room with 6 armed children. It's crazy. I stayed on the safe side of the glass and watched as my children fired at small pieces of paper. Very nerve wracking.
Kris commented on my hair yesterday. He said that he hadn't known it was long.
Which is not surprising since he has never actually seen me. (Hi KJP)
I am just growing comfortable with the realization that it's long, and this is perhaps more surprising. It's just that it's all behind me, growing behind my back. I've been trying to grow it out for ages, and so I have this image in my mind of medium length hair. Once in a while I'll see a photo of myself, and the first thing I notice (after I see that I no longer look 20) is the fact that my hair is not medium length. It is, in fact, down to my waist. This is very feminine and gives me no small delight.
However, there are problems associated with it. Sometimes, when I am getting dressed, my hair gets stuck in the waistline of my pants, and my chin gets trapped in the air. Or, I'll put it back into a ponytail, and I still have hair in my face all day. Plus, It is not OK for me to look up while using the bathroom, because...well, you figure it out. And you know how the ladies on Little House on the Prairie always slept in braids? I know why. It's because all that hair can tangle around your neck in the night. You could die. It's awful.
So, long hair adds that flair of danger to my everyday life. That, plus the femininity thing, add up to great reasons to keep it.
Stylists can't stand it, though. I never ever go into a professional to have it cut. The last time I did, the gal took off 4 INCHES. That's 8 months of growth. I should have sued. Now, either Jenine will trim it for me, or I trim it myself. Contrary to popular opinion, the world will not end if you neglect to trim your hair every 6 weeks. I manage to poke it with scissors once or twice annually.
So, apparently my topic du jour is guns and hair. Very Annie Oakly.

Hey Annie -
Did the boys have fun? I imagine with the open spaces not far from you there is plenty of safe plinking available!
We ought to have some pictures of you plinking right along side them!
If you decide to get them .22's for Christmas - you might consider the Ruger 10/22. Exceptional little rifle and run about $175 (I saw when I was in California last summer), maybe cheaper in a place that likes firearms.
Youngest daughter has some hair growing gene that produces at a rate you would not believe and it is incredibly thick! In the past year she has twice donated donated 14" +/- (you know me and math!) to a group whom build wigs for women in cancer treatment. But now she wants to grow it out for her trip to Italy in 2008. Not sure about that one....
